Petipa
The Petipa Ballet Association, formerly known as the Petipa Heritage Foundation, is an international cultural organization dedicated to preserving, restoring, and advancing the choreographic legacy of Marius Petipa — the legendary father of classical ballet..
Relocation
Founded in 2016 by acclaimed choreographers Vasily Medvedev and Stanislav Fečo, the initiative was born out of a shared passion for historical ballet and a vision to ensure that the works of Petipa and his contemporaries continue to flourish on the world stage. After years of global artistic collaboration and growth, the Foundation is now evolving: we are proudly relocating from California to Europe and rebranding as the Petipa Ballet Association, to strengthen our roots in the cultural landscape that gave rise to classical ballet.
Mission
Protect and disseminate the choreographic, artistic, and academic legacy of Marius Petipa.
Reconstruct and present authentic versions of his classical ballets for contemporary audiences.
Support and promote artistic excellence and innovation in classical ballet.
Educate the public and artistic community through research, archival preservation, performances, and publications.
Nurture the next generation of dancers, choreographers, scholars, and ballet enthusiasts.
Petipa Award
Established in 2019 by Vasily Medvedev and Stanislav Fečo, the Petipa Award honors outstanding dedication to classical ballet and the advancement of Petipa’s vision. Awarded annually, it recognizes exceptional dancers, choreographers, critics, and institutions who embody the artistry, discipline, and creativity at the heart of Petipa’s legacy.
Past recipients include icons such as Natalia Makarova, Pierre Lacotte, Lucia Lacarra, Hugo Marchand, Elisa Carrillo Cabrera, Manuel Legris, Mikhail Kaniskin and the Dutch National Ballet and Slovak National Ballet. The most recent Petipa Award Gala was held in San Francisco in September 2023, marking a landmark celebration of global talent and dedication to the classical art form.
Global Reach, European Heart
Under the artistic guidance of Medvedev and Fečo, Petipa’s masterpieces have been revived and staged in collaboration with major companies including Staatsballett Berlin, Bolshoi Ballet Compañía, Nacional de Danza (Mexico), Slovak National Ballet, Croatian National Ballet, Lithuanian National Ballet, National Opera Bucharest, Czech National Ballet, Macedonian Opera and Ballet Theatre
